Get ready to fly up, up, and away to nearby Townsend for the annual Great Smoky Mountains Hot Air Balloon Festival on Saturday, Aug. 16.

This family-friendly event features vendors, a beer garden, and professional balloonists offering a chance to see the views of the mountains from inside hot air balloons + ends with a lighting of the balloons in the sky.

In case you’re not already sold on the ~45-minute drive to see + take a tethered ride on these larger-than-life balloons — here’s how to make the most of your trip.

For the day trippers

1 p.m. | Grab a bite before the festival — Little River Pub and Deli serves up craft sandwiches on its scenic patio.
