City Guide

Dare you take the path less traveled by?

One nearby spot just made it onto a list of America’s 10 most haunting hikes: the Ghost House Trail.

Located ~40 minutes from downtown Knoxville in Big Ridge State Park, the 1.2-mile loop passes a cemetery — but that’s not the only reason it topped the list.

The trail’s tale

Ghost House Trail’s name itself comes from the tale of a nearby abandoned home called Hutchinson House, where a girl named Mary Hutchinson died of tuberculosis in the late 1800s. Legend has it that Mary, her father, and their dog haunt the trail.

And history only adds mystery; the land where the trail is located was once home to a town called Loyston, which now only exists as an underwater ghost town beneath Norris Lake.

If you dare to trek...

What can you expect? According to the ranking by Mental Floss, some hikers have heard footsteps, phantom movements, and a child crying.
